Happy Columbus Day

And I refuse to ever call it “Indigenous People’s Day”. Why would I want to celebrate groups of people who murdered, raped, kidnapped and ate their enemies?

Does that seem harsh? Maybe it is. But it’s also true. Would you like to know the last group of people in the USA who gave up their slaves? No, it wasn’t the Democrats, they were second to last. The last people to give up slavery were the native tribes. The Cherokee, as they walked the Trail of Tears, brought their slaves with them.

“You white people live on stolen land!” Stolen from who, exactly? And who did THEY steal it from? Many of the native tribal names that we use today are not what those tribes called themselves. The names were another tribe’s word for “enemy“. We would ask, say, the Navaho who this other tribe was, and the Navaho would say “Ana’i”. Or, “enemy” in the Navaho tongue. Which we turned into “Anasazi”.

When Columbus showed up on the Eastern shore, he found people who didn’t have a written language. They hadn’t even invented the wheel yet. And many of them were violent. Some were friendly and helpful, true. But not all of them.

So… if I must celebrate this day, why or whom should I celebrate it for? I’m going with the guy who took three tiny ships (and I’ve seen the replica of the Santa Maria, it was itty-bitty), then sailed across the ocean when everybody said it couldn’t be done, found land, and then sailed back.

I hope you have a great day. Remember to pray.

And buy more ammo.

Oh, one other thing. Columbus and the Spanish monarchy were under precisely ZERO confusion as to whether the Earth was round or flat. They knew it was round and were doing nothing but looking for a shorter, safer and (hopefully) faster trip to the spice trade in Eastern Asia and India, instead of being forced to make the dangerous and lengthy journey around the Horn of Africa and dealing with pirates all along the trip. They merely misjudged the distance (slightly) and didn’t suspect two other continents in the way. The naming error (naming the islands ‘The Indies’ was known and attempts were made to correct it before Columbus finished his journeys) failed.

Also, Big C didn’t refer to them as “Indians” because he thought they were in India. He referred to them as ‘Los Gentes en (or in ) Dios ‘ (God’s People).
